Trail runner on a forest path covered in autumn leaves

Fall is the best season for trail running. The heat breaks, the crowds thin out, and the forests put on a show. Here are five favorites from our team.

1. Lake Blanche, Utah

Steep and rocky, with a payoff of a glassy alpine lake surrounded by golden aspens. Go early in October for peak color.

2. Mount Tamalpais, California

The Dipsea and Matt Davis loop mixes redwood forest with ocean views. Fog in the morning, sunshine by noon.

3. Presidential Range, New Hampshire

Technical and exposed, so check the weather. The foliage below treeline is some of the best in the country.

4 and 5. Our local secrets

The Wildwood Trail in Portland and the Mesa Trail in Boulder are both accessible from the city and are perfect for a long Saturday run in the Ridge.
