Trail
A beginner’s guide to trail running
Swap pavement for dirt. Everything you need to know for your first few runs on the trails.

Trail running is slower, harder, and a lot more fun than road running. It also asks different things of your body and your gear.
Forget your pace
Expect to run 1 to 3 minutes per mile slower than on the road. Hiking steep climbs is not cheating; it is what experienced trail runners do.
Gear that helps
A trail shoe like the Ridge gives you grip on loose dirt and protection from rocks. Carry water, a phone, and tell someone your route.
Eyes up
Look 10 to 15 feet ahead, not at your feet. Your brain will map the ground and your feet will follow. Short, quick steps keep you balanced.
Leave no trace
Stay on the trail, pack out everything you bring, and yield to hikers and horses. Trails are shared spaces.
